Sometimes the pump can be in very bad shape.

The pump seems to be getting hot unusually there may be a problem or obstruction in the suction line. When there are air leaks in the suction line the pump is not bringing up the correct amount of water because of the intake of air in the suction line.

When checking a pump for air leaks is a good idea to expose all of the piping and to check it all the way to the existing well including checking the check valve. Now sometimes when these problems happen it’s necessary to open the suction line completely from the from the pump to the well.

Some of the suction lines can be up to 100 feet long to check all possible joints and cracks in the suction line. Then if there are no leaks found in the suction line to the well then the emphasis needs to be focused on the well casing. Now the only way to check a well casing is to do a vacuum test on the well casing.

A vacuum test is a large gauge that is installed on the wellhead to check if there are any vacuum leaks indicated on the gauge. It is a good idea to have a well contractor check this for you so you know what could be the dilemma with the well.

With a jet pump dirt to get into the front housing of the jet. The dirt may be cleaned from opening a quarter inch plug under the suction line of the pump and taking a coat hanger and using the wire to clear the jet by inserting about 4 inches of wire into the pump.

On a jet pump when the pressure will only build to about 35 pounds and will not get more than that which causes the pressure switch and the pump not to turn off. If this method does not work correctly you may have to take the pump apart and clean and check the impeller in the pump. If the impeller is overheated and melted it’s necessary to replace and install a new seal for the pump.

Another problem that can occur with a jet pump is water leaking from the motor housing and the pump, most of the time you just need to replace the pump seal.
