When your well stops pumping water, it does not necessarily mean you need to buy a new water well pump or dig a new well. Water well pumps are designed to keep working for a long time; some can last for 20 years or longer. Residential well systems include many components, any of which can cause the well to stop delivering water.

Test the Power. Verify that the electrical circuit for the Well pump has not tripped before getting too concerned about your home’s lack of water, increased power usage or a power surge can cause the circuit breaker to trip and shut the system off. Locate the service panel and the circuit breaker for the pump, turn the circuit on and then off again to make sure.

Small Water Well Pump. Residential water pump usually pumps 10 gallons per minute out of the well using a ½ horsepower motor, the size of this pump is determined by the size of your home if you recently built a new bathroom or kitchen or use a large amount of water for irrigation the size of the pump may be too small.

Pressure Tank. If the pressure tank does not have the right air pressure inside it, it will not send the correct signal to the pressure switch to turn the tank on. Check to see if the pressure switch has not shut down, it is found on the top of the feed line from the Well pump to the tank.
