The majority of water heaters last between eight to 12 years. Even if a water heater is not showing signs that need to be replaced, you should do it once a decade has passed from its manufacture date. The way to learn about the age of your water heater is to look at and decoded the serial number usually located on the upper half of the tank.

When rust appears in the hot water from the faucets in your sink and bathtub, is when heaters pass their expiration date. Rusting can occur in any water heater, even those that are only between eight and ten years old.

Another sign of a tank water heater replacement is noise from it. As the heater ages, rumbling noises will start emanating louder and louder as the tank heats up the water, and it is caused by sediment buildup that will make the tank eventually leak. If water has appeared around the tank,  there could be also something wrong with the fittings, is better to call a plumber to examine the connections to the tank and the pressure overflow pipe.
