Toilets have a bowl, trip lever, tank, handle, stopper or flapper valve, and flush-valve system. Once you press the handle, the trip lever pulls the chain attached to the stopper inside the tank. When the stopper raises, the water within the tank evacuates entirely through the flush-valve system, the stopper drops, and the tank refills.

If you have a running toilet problem you notice one of the following situations:

• The  flapper rises to let the water out, but it does not close again,
• The flapper closes, and water increases but does not stop before the level reaches the top of the overflow pipe
• You can still hear a small flow of liquid despite the flapper looks like is close and the water inlet valve seemed to shut off.
