Owners of private wells and other individual water systems are responsible for ensuring that their water is safe from contaminants.  Historically, the area is known to have incidents of arsenic, solvents, nitrate, and the particular pesticide known as Dildren.  Therefore, if you own a well, you should have it tested at a laboratory once each year for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH levels.  If you suspect other contaminants, you should test for those as well.

In addition, the Florida Department of Health conducts testing in areas adjacent to known contaminated wells.  The results of any tests within the South Florida may be obtained via the Florida Department of Health website.

Proper well construction and continued maintenance are keys to the safety of your water supply.  There are many sources of contamination of ground water which in turn, can affect a private well.  The most common sources of contaminants include:

  • Naturally occuring chemicals and minerals (for example, arsenic, radon, and uranium),;
  • Local land use practices (fertilizers, pesticides, livestock, animal feeding operations);
  • Manufacturing processes;
  • Sewer overflows;  and
  • Malfunctioning wastewater treatment systems such as nearby septic systems.

Any time you notice a significant change in your water quality, you should have it tested.  A change in your water’s taste, color, or smell is not necessarily a health concern.  However, a change could be a sign of a serious contamination problem.
